Billions of Credentials Leaked: What You Need to Know About the Infostealer Data Dump

This week, cybersecurity researchers revealed one of the largest data breaches in history, and it should be a wake-up call for businesses and individuals alike.

According to a report by Cybernews, a massive dataset containing nearly 10 billion unique usernames and passwords has been discovered online. Dubbed the “Mother of All Breaches” (MOAB), the trove was compiled from multiple infostealer malware campaigns, credential stuffing incidents, and previous data breaches.

At WebHD, we take cybersecurity seriously, and while none of our clients have reported direct impacts so far, the sheer scale of this leak means it’s worth checking your systems, updating credentials, and reviewing your security policies immediately.

What Happened?

Cybernews reports that the leaked database includes around 9.9 billion unique plaintext credentials, many of which were stolen by infostealer malware; malicious software designed to capture login credentials, session tokens, browser cookies, and other sensitive data.

The leak features credentials for major platforms including:

  • Apple

  • Google

  • Facebook

  • GitHub

  • Telegram

  • government services

  • …and thousands of lesser-known platforms.

What makes this leak particularly concerning is that many of the credentials are still valid, especially for users who reuse passwords or haven’t updated them in years. The information has been compiled into a single, easy-to-search database, creating a perfect storm for hackers and cybercriminals to exploit.

What Does This Mean for Businesses?

Credential leaks on this scale don’t just affect individual users, they pose a serious risk to businesses, especially those whose employees may use compromised logins across personal and professional platforms.

This kind of data can be used for:

  • Credential stuffing attacks on your systems

  • Phishing campaigns targeting staff or customers

  • Account takeovers leading to data loss or financial damage

  • Reputational harm if business or client data is exposed

If your business uses shared accounts, third-party platforms, or allows remote login, this is the time to act.

How to Protect Your Business and Your Clients

If you haven’t reviewed your cybersecurity practices recently, here are some urgent steps you should take:

  • Reset any reused or weak passwords
  • Enforce two-factor authentication (2FA) across all accounts
  • Encourage staff to use password managers to avoid reuse
  • Check for compromised emails using tools like Have I Been Pwned
  • Review third-party software and integrations
  • Educate your team on phishing and social engineering risks
