What Happened and How It Affected Some of Our Clients
On Wednesday, June 12th, 2025, businesses and users across the globe experienced significant disruptions due to a major outage in Google Cloud services. The incident impacted numerous platforms that rely on Google’s infrastructure, including Spotify, Discord, Shopify, and even Google’s own services like Gmail, Search, Maps, and Drive.
Here at Web HD, we closely monitored the situation as it unfolded, and we can confirm that some of our clients were directly affected. All those with websites and platforms using Google authentication tools, integrated cloud storage, or dependent on third-party services that went down may have been affected. In most cases, the disruption likely resulted in brief downtime, login issues, slow traffic and potentially slow load speeds. Fortunately, for the majority, normal service resumed later that day as Google resolved the issue globally.
What Caused the Outage?
According to The Verge, the problem originated from a fault in Google Cloud’s Identity and Access Management (IAM) and Cloud Storage systems. These core functions are critical for user verification and data delivery across many apps and services. Once the IAM service was interrupted, apps that rely on Google for logging in or loading cloud-based content quickly became inaccessible.
Spotify users, for instance, encountered specific error messages like “Audiences in Jwt are not allowed.” Meanwhile, major websites like Etsy, UPS, and Twitch also reported temporary unavailability or degraded performance.
Even Google services themselves were not spared, with Gmail, Meet, and Drive experiencing slow performance or complete outages in some regions.
The Ripple Effect Across the Internet
As with many modern outages, the impact wasn’t limited to just one ecosystem. Because so many platforms, especially SaaS and e-commerce sites, depend on cloud-based tools for their day-to-day functionality, this one outage sent ripples across the internet. Affected platforms included:
- Music & Entertainment: Spotify, Discord, Twitch
- E-commerce & Retail: Shopify, Etsy
- Tech & Dev Tools: Replit, Cloudflare, OpenAI
- Logistics & Delivery: UPS
- Home Automation: Google Home and Nest devices
This highlights just how interconnected modern digital systems have become, and why infrastructure resilience is more important than ever.
How Web HD Responded
We reached out to affected clients, offered guidance, and tracked service status updates from Google and third-party providers in real time. While there was little anyone outside Google could do to resolve the core issue, we worked to keep our clients informed, reassured, and ready to restore full functionality as soon as systems came back online.
We’re proud that our clients experienced only minimal disruption, and no long-term data or performance issues have been reported.
