WhatsApp Usernames Are Rolling Out: How to Reserve Yours Before It’s Gone

WhatsApp Usernames

WhatsApp is introducing one of its biggest privacy updates in years: usernames. Instead of having to share your phone number with everyone you message, you’ll soon be able to connect using a unique username instead.

With billions of people using WhatsApp worldwide, securing your preferred username early could save you from disappointment later.

What Are WhatsApp Usernames?

The new feature allows you to create a unique username that people can use to find and message you without needing your phone number.

This means:

  • Greater privacy when chatting with new contacts.
  • No need to give strangers your personal mobile number.
  • Your username becomes your public identity on WhatsApp.

Once the feature is active, anyone who doesn’t already have your number saved will see your username instead of your phone number by default.

Why This Matters

Privacy has become increasingly important, especially for business owners, freelancers and anyone who communicates with people they don’t know personally.

Instead of saying:

“Here’s my phone number…”

You’ll simply be able to say:

“Message me on WhatsApp: @yourusername”

It’s a cleaner, safer way to connect.

Reserve Your Username Before Everyone Else

WhatsApp has already started allowing some users to reserve usernames before the full rollout.

If the feature is available on your account, it’s worth claiming your preferred name as soon as possible. With more than 3 billion users expected to eventually have access, popular usernames are unlikely to stay available for long.

How to Reserve Your WhatsApp Username

If the feature has reached your account:

  1. Update WhatsApp to the latest version.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Tap Account.
  4. Select Username.
  5. Choose your preferred username and reserve it.

If you don’t see the option yet, don’t worry, WhatsApp is rolling the feature out gradually across different countries and devices.

There's Another Privacy Feature You Should Enable

Alongside usernames, WhatsApp has introduced an optional Username Key.

This acts as an additional layer of privacy. People will need to know both your username and your Username Key before they can message you, making it even harder for unwanted contacts to reach you.

If available, you can enable it within the same Settings menu.

Should Businesses Reserve Their Username?

Absolutely.

Businesses should secure usernames that match:

  • Their business name
  • Brand name
  • Trading name
  • Common abbreviations

Doing so helps maintain brand consistency and makes it easier for customers to find the correct account.

Final Thoughts

The introduction of WhatsApp usernames is a significant step towards better online privacy and easier communication. Whether you’re an individual wanting to protect your phone number or a business looking to strengthen your brand, reserving your username early is a smart move.

If the feature is already available on your account, it’s worth taking just a minute to secure the username you want before someone else does.
